I wonder if it would be worthwhile to have a trivial "what time do you have"
command added to the protocol? Something like client sends
UTCTIME 200009281136
and gets back
UTCTIME 200009281139
Not valid for time syncing the hosts, of course, but a useful tip for client
and server to see if they're at least in the same ball-park...
