No line feed translation for text files. Not sure if you're getting proper
merge behavior or not, but I think you are. I think you'd have to specify a
merge type of copy to break that.

Don't forget the initial copy, but how about this?
cp -Rpdx dirtoimport newname
cd newname
find . -maxdepth 1 -type d -exec rm -rf {} \;
cvs import ...
