I have been using the Fogel bootk Open Source Development with CVS as I get
started using CVS. That book has a couple of good examples of branching
and merging strategies in his chapter on Advanced CVS. This book is
available online at:

http://cvsbook.red-bean.com/cvsbook.html

This will get you a table of contents of the freely available chapters. I
suggest checking out the section called "Going Out On A Limb (How To Work
With Branches And Survive)" and its subsections "The Dovetail Approach -
Merging In And Out Of The Trunk" and "The Flying Fish Approach - A Simpler
Way To Do It" for information on branching and merging and two of the more
popular strategies.
