I think the critical question is
what kind of IS support you get on that solaris
system at the university, and how will your laptop/home
system access the university systems?
I.e. are you going to get permission to set up
a pserver port for cvs on the solaris system (requires
root access)? Can you set up SSH for secure access between
your home systems and the university system? Or do you have
some kind of dial up access where you get on the university
network directly so you could run pserver commands
to the solaris system without hitting a firewall?

You'd learn alot if you could set it up, but it is
a fairly complicated system admin task - and I think
you'll probably hit road blocks getting the IS support/root access you
need on a university server.
If all that gets too complicated you'll probably have to
just ftp your changes from home back to your repository
at school and do the commits on that system.
