I personally use rsync. All our machines have the r* command disabled, so I have to use 'rsync -essh' to ensure rsync uses ssh for transport. This works great for remote hosts over insecure networks. I've pretty much stopped using tar+ftp. Be sure the read the man pages for the difference between rsync -av -essh /var/cvs newserver:/new/cvsroot/path and rsync -av -essh /var/cvs/ newserver:/new/cvsroot/path (note the trailing slash on "/var/cvs/"). -- Remember: every member of your 'target audience' also owns a broadcasting station.
