I've had somewhat related problems, using SMB instead of NFS. Unfortunately I never did finish rooting out the problem or determining whether a solution was to be had as the requirement to use a remote repository cropped up, and we switched everything (both Windows and Linux) to using CVS over ssh. Linux was no problem. I had to do some digging to get Windows clients to work and wrote up some notes for that.
