You could keep the version history, if files are datestamped more or less consistently... If I understand you correctly, a file foo could have copies over time, say
foo foo.2003-04-23 foo.2003-06-32 or, with developer initials foo foo.2003-04-23.RE foo.2003-06-32.MB etc. Right? I should be rather easy to write a script that looks for all those versions of file foo, and commits them one by one, ordered by time, putting the version suffix in the log message.
