You certainly can, but most people just install the standard executable
that can be used as a client, a server, or standalone.

I don't know of any pre-built client-only executables. You can download
the source code, configure it for client-only, and build it yourself, or
you can download a pre-built standard executable and just use it as a
client. You can get either from:
