What does `cvs status'' say about the missing files? If this was just a "plain" checkout (not on a branch), then the problem is almost certainly that the files are in the Attic when they should not be (there were some bugs in old releases of CVS that prevented it from moving files out of the Attic under certain unusual circumstances).
