If you are using :ext: with 'ssh' as the transport, you may configure
compression over the transport by modifications to your
$HOME/.ssh/config file. However, by default it does do compression.

If you are using :ext: with 'rsh' as the transport, you may wish to
consider using the '-z 9' option to heavily compress the data being
trasmitted over the wire.

As Arthur suggests, if you want good answers to your questions, provide
good information about what you are trying to solve and how things are
configured.
