only r* commands can be ran directly against the repository.
cvs --help-commands 2>&1 |grep " r"|grep -v re
cvs -d CVS_repository rlog REP/TEST.TXT
or in a checked out copy
cd REP
cvs history TEST.TXT
cvs log TEST.TXT
BTW I assume that because you did not indicate you are working in some other environment, that you
are working in a Unix or Unix like environment.
