There are a couple of other things I should mention about this approach. First: do not move or modify the files, only use IMAP to do that. Otherwise you'll need to reconstruct the mailbox, and it's just nicer to use IMAP. Second, make sure not to read in the cyrus.* files - just use the *. mail files. Otherwise - well, it's worked well for me.
