Thanks for the help,

I loaded up another box with ubunutu and took things step by step and
had exactly the same results.  Quite frustrating.

So I did the same thing with Debian 3.1 and it worked perfectly.  It
must be something in the Ubuntu distribution that's causing it, I'll
see if I can follow it up with someone there.
