Put this line in the beginning of your ~/.emacs file:

(require 'mm-util)

Though this is no more than a workaround.  Maybe you can find
the real culprit by performing:

C-h f replace-in-string RET

The file shown in the result as follows is it:

replace-in-string is a compiled Lisp function in `xxxxxxxx.el'.

(replace-in-string target old new)
