The error message indicates that `gnus-group-unread' (which is a macro) is called like a function. Glancing at the gnus-notify.el code at http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/gnus-notify.el I can't see where this happens. Could you do M-x toggle-debug-on-error RET and then trigger the problem again?
