The mail server explicitly tells you that you need to log in, and Gnus
doesn't, it forges ahead with "MAIL FROM".

And your ~/.authinfo.gpg is encrypted with GPG? What does "file
~/.authinfo.gpg" say?

than what you see in the trace.
