Unfortunately compacting is necessary for me every two or three
months. My mail.expiry has 20 or so emails at the bottom which I haven't
yet completely expired. These emails are old, and as the directory fills
up with new emails these bottom emails cease to be visible. At that
point compacting is required, which these brings the bottom emails "back
in to view".
