Sean and Michael, thanks to both of you. I was unaware that the change I made to gnus-parameters *did* take effect. I was running G p and G c on the groups, and the output, rather strangely, did not reflect any changes. Looking at the output alone gives no hint that something has changed. Apparently with GNUS, what you see is not always what you get.
