Well, probably in general, but it depends on what you're doing.  I prefer to 
have (gnus) near the end of my sequence of startup files.  The biggest 
disadvantage is that depending on circumstances it could slow down startup.  I 
do a network check before calling (gnus) to avoid a delay if for some reason 
I'm offline.

All that said, I don't fetch all groups and certainly not RSS groups, which I 
leave at level 5.  I only fetch levels 1-3, and as I'm not subscribed to a lot 
of things, this isn't a big holdup (unless the network is very slow).  I poll 
RSS groups only when I want to read one, by pressing ENTER on the group line in 
the Group buffer.

M-x gnus would indeed work at least as well, but I prefer to have my main 
groups (like INBOX) loaded when startup is complete.
