Mitch, likely that means that the AD location (CN=username,OU=x,OU=x,DC=local,DC=emmetsburg,DC=k12,DC=ia,DC=us) is incorrect. If you have your students in different OUs (say, by the year of graduation), then you will have to change the UserDN accordingly. Another possible reason for that error might be that you are pointing to an object (like a computer or group) that does not support 'dsmod user'.
