Karl,

We have Mitel IP controllers, tied with IP trunks between them. I think ours
work very well, but I did the work, so I may be biased....

VoIP is great, as long as you understand what it takes for a successful
implementation. I am not a big fan of the hybrid systems, simply based on the
way most of them communicate. I know some people would argue with me on that
one, so I would be more than happy to explain that one if somebody is actually
curious... :)
The key to VoIP is QoS and solid connections. VoIP uses little bandwidth, and
if prioritization is in place (DSCP, VLAN QoS, etc.) you should not run into
too many issues as far as the IP communication is concerned.

One thing that can be an issue is the quality of the land lines coming in. We
do not have a T-1 (PRI) yet, so like most schools we are relying on the regular
CO lines coming in. Any issues you have with these will be amplified with an
IP based system. All of the IP based systems I have dealt with have line
measuring tools to compensate for this, but if they are not run, or are not
used correctly, you can have issues. This will not be an issue with a T-1 or a
PRI.

Probably more information than anyone wanted... :)

OK, so I will play the dumb tech guy roll today. Who is using VOIP in
their districts, how is it working, who is your provider?

1) Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and
ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2) Anything that's invented between when you're 15 and 35 is new and
exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3) Anything invented after you're 35 is again the natural order of
things
