Hoodoo,

I couldn't have stated it better! Thus, its no surprise there are
approximately 23+ million subscribers to their service. Many friends, whom I
consider comparatively computer literate, subscribe to AOL because it gives
them, what they feel, are better child safety measures. However, any good
ISP will also provide those same features. My sister uses MSN and it allows
her to block sex from her rather curious 14 year old boy.

Another feature that scares AOL members into remaining with the service is
the fact that once on an ISP, most content will have to be gotten via search
engines. AOL does not give the user the opportunity to explore, to grow and
learn. You are trapped within the confines of their content. I can search
any newspaper, magazine or periodical and find the same content without the
help of channels, without their restrictive boundaries.

I believe you become more computer/internet savvy off AOL. There is not much
opportunity for the average person to learn their way around. Granted, some
do venture beyond the walls on constraint but most remain in the comfortable
cocoon AOL provides.

That's my impression.
