Windows had some shutdown problems, but your problem sounds like the video card is not
seated into the pci or agp slot (that is, if you even have one, and it's not
integrated into the mother board).

After a monitor cools, when you switch it back on dust may cause a funny burning
smell. My monitor seems to collect dust!!!

I had this very same problem with a Linux box but can't remember what I did. It was a
new install, so I think something was missed during installation and I just
reinstalled. In any case, these new monitors with the trip switches like the Sony
Trinitrons act weird, click and pop (switch the led (Yellow/Green) on and off) when
they lose the video feed during shutdown. I suspect this part of the monitor circuit
could "possibly" go bad too but in my case the monitor was fairly new at the time.

If you are smelling that smell and it's not dust or a lose video card, then I would
check for excessive heat on the power cable. Also, I have never had this happen but
if you changed cases the mother board or something could be shorted. Monitors do get
very hot and smell funny if you put your nose too close, so I assume you are smelling
this smell while sitting at the keyboard?

(Q) I am building my own pc. I followed the instrucions and everything seemed to be
going fine the initial boot up was fine it went thru the BIOS then I powered down to
add more cards--then rebooted and the monitor has no video the litle yellow light
comes on but it dosen't follow up with the green light and a picture. I switched
monitors nothing, I switched cords nothing, took out all the cards except the graphics
card nothing, tried a different PCI slot nothing. What went wrong? I really hope I
don't have replace the motherboard, it's brand new. I even tried a different graphics
card nothing happened, so I tried the graphic card I was using in a another computer
to see if it was the problem it worked fine.

(A) It does sound like the motherboard. With some ATX motherboard and power supplies,
you should really unplug them from the wall before adding adapters, because there is
always 700mA or so available on the I/O bus for adapters to do Wake On LAN or Wake on
Ring (with modems). That applies even when the computer is switched off. It's a
somewhat unpublicized fact, but I've seen some detailed photographs actually showing
motherboard failure from this cause, intermittent shorts burning motherboard traces
and discrete components up during insertion.

That reminds me, my room is a victim of clutter and possibly a fire hazard. Going to
clean up today and purchase a fire extinguisher and smoke detector. One of our local
gurus lost his house (everything) to a fire a few weeks ago. I suspect his computer
room to be the source of the fire.

You may or maynot have a serious problem, but fire has no mercy.

Jay

I received an NVIDIA GeForce3 TI 500 for Christmas and my son
installed it soon after. Now I am wondering if that may be the
problem. It certainly started to get worse after that
installation!

I will have to look into it and see what the problem might be. I
have a fairly new motherboard, an Abit BF6 - 440BX ATX ... no
it's not overclocked *S*
That was installed in January 2000 and works fine.

I will get back in a day or two. I need some help to move this
because of my back. Thanks for the info.

Rita, it could be a lousy solder joint, in the monitor. David had to fix
mine two times. A friend of his who works on monitors told him that was the
most common problem with them.
