Hi Ben,

Here is what is happening.

A SPAMMER sends an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a forged reply-to/From address of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The mail server for somesystem.com sees the message as undeliverable to someaddess because someaddress does not exist on that mail server.

Then somesystem.com sends the bounce message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] saying the mail could not be delivered.

I guess no one else is seeing this.

Thanks for your help!

Steve

So, you're saying that remote mail servers to which you are not sending mail are erroneously sending you spam bounces? Or are you just getting spammed to your postmaster address? If it's the former, then I'm not quite sure what to suggest, beyond perhaps contacting some of those organizations (I'd think you could trace the host via the IPs). If it's the latter, then PrismAS (which is an anti-spam tool sold by Cool Fusion) may help.

Ben, the 2nd part of your reply is indeed the case. However, typically the other mail servers strip most if not all of the actual message (altho many do not and include the spam message etc). It is the case of where the other mail servers are stripping the guts of the message and delivering it to postmaster that is the main problem.

Of course, if the bounces you are getting are just straight up spam from other mail servers, and not legitimate bounces, then you may want to consider running something like PrismAS.

Hope that helps,
Ben

Hi all,
This list has been quiet for too long so I must break the silence...
For quite some time we ran IMS without a "postmaster" set. We found that some mail servers now want a valid postmaster account to be available or they will not deliver email. Since turning this on the "postmaster" has been receiving way too much "unable to deliver" sort of messages from other email servers that won't deliver spam email.
Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem?
Steve
