Good question Stephen, one I've been wanting to ask for a while myself.
I've been experimenting with analysis of messages that have images attached but
it is proving difficult to do effectively without a significant level of false
positives. I even thought about trying some kind of OCR but recent samples of
images suggest that the spammers are already onto that with images with
patterned backgrounds.
I turned on RBL checking a few months ago and added some code to HELO to keep
track of banned IP addresses and to count the hits against each address as
well. I must admit that I had not checked the stats on this for a while but at
this point there are 162,680 IP addresses on record for a total hit count of
418,573 messages blocked. So I guess I'm relying on RBL to do most of the work
for me. (Keep in mind that I only host about a dozen domains for email so those
numbers are quite surprising for me.)
Looking forward to hearing from the 'pro' email hosters out there...
