Some things to consider:

- Hardware

I prefer fast SCSI disks with RAID-1 redundancy. For applications that read/write a
lot of files (a mail server is a good example of this) you don't usually want the
overhead of RAID-5 (although some newer RADI-5 systems are much faster than older
RAID-5 setups). I would also choose a RAID card with a good amount of read/write
cache.

As for memory/cpu I would recommend dual CPUs and 1GB RAM (RAM is relatively cheap
nowadays).

- Software

A single iMS Enterprise server should be sufficient for a long time. However, later
on you can always utilize redundant servers for mail sending/receiving. We will also
be making improvments to iMS in regards to the outbound queue and possibly better load
balancing capabilities which will make things even better for a setup like yours.

HTH,

Howie

Subject: [iMS] Server specs for 10000 pop3/webmail users

Hello Howie and all!

I'm currently in the process of specifying a server setup for a
potential customer.
This setup is a bit new to me and I hope to get valuable advice from you
- I guess my needs is not very uncommon for some of you - In Norway this
is a LARGE setup... (the biggest company in Norway has around 30 000
employees - and there is only a handful with above 20 000 employees)

The customer needs a system that grows over time - and I need some hints
on what hardware / licenses to start with - so that the upgrade to more
users is as easy and cost effective as possible.

The setup will be:

Dedicated iMS server with ColdFusion professional (pop3/smtp, antivirus
and different filters, lists, autoresponders etc)
Dedicated MSSQL 2000 server
Dedicated CFMX/IIS web server(s) with CMS / portal including web mail
(there will be lots of additional modules on this portal - and it will
work towards the same DB as iMS)
Starting with 10Mbps internet access (shared with our other systems -
average usage today is below 1Mbps)

iMS Enterprise with PrismAV (to be purchased after customer accept on
offer (hint :-))

The email accts need pricing and sufficient hardware/software in the
following steps:

<500 accounts
500-1500 accounts
1500-5000 accounts
5000-10000 accounts
>10000 accounts

(I guess we'll reach 5000+ accounts after about 2 years)

So - is there any "golden rule" on how to determine the needs for
processing power / storage space / DB power?

Growing from <500 - <10000 accounts is probably not a thing to do on the
same hardware - but what power should we start with - where would we
need to upgrade to better servers - and how much storage and processing
power is needed with say 15 000 email accounts.

Thanks in advance!
