You can make a copy of the FusionMail folder for testing, no problem.
 
As for the application.cfm - not sure but the application.cfm that comes with FusionMail has client management and session management enabled.

Checked all of those, no problems with the dsource.cfm files.
IMS is processing emails (mostly spams 8^{ ) just fine.  POP is working with no problems.

Can I install the fusionmail templates into a different folder so I can look at a base install without affecting the online system? Do I need to do this on a different server to be safe?

I'm still stuck on why part of fusionmail is looking for session vars and the application.cfm had session vars turned off.
