It happened to me once with KDE. IT has to do with the ACPI functions being disabled. Perhaps it has to do with initng as the version I installed didn't load /etc/modprobe.preload, but only /etc/modules. And the ACPI modules (including the BUTTON module which allows you to press the power button on your PC) were in modprobe.preload.
