Thanks, Martin, for investigating the speed issues. While it's unfortunate that the consequences consist of removing functionality (the 'I favourited this item' frames are gone, too, I think because they ate too many resources), I agree that it's more important that we are able to edit and view the site within a reasonable amount of time. People will hopefully discover the language switcher easily (but I think many will just go with the English page now).
I will create that bug report just to remind us that the functionality was lost, in case there's some server resource improvement or other thing that frees up resources so we can put that back in.
