Adding Brian's cryptic message to Jarkko's recent message on p5p I had
already come up with 5. At first I thought it was great news. I still
think it's probably a good idea, but I wouldn't be too concerned if it
didn't happen.
I have been considering using Inline to add some C to speed up and
reduce memory usage of my CPAN module. If Inline is in the core, that
is easy, but for a while I'm sure I would still need to support the Perl
part anyway, so it wouldn't bother me to say if you need the C part you
must install Inline first.
However, the sooner Inline gets in the core, the sooner it is in old
versions of Perl too.

I would guess that the long awaited version 2 will not be ready for
prime time by 5.8.0 ETA.
