I've been spending the past day or two reading "Extending and Embedding
Perl" by Tim Jenness and Simon Cozens. It's a great introduction to XS,
and also covers a lot of the hairier stuff. (Such as passing arrays
around, structs, etc. etc.)

Perhaps take a look at it? (It was released quite recently.)
