The New South Wales Synod Communications Unit repeated its success at the 2003 Australasian Religious Press Association awards by coming away with the prize for best website at the 2004 awards.
But, whereas last year the Unit won for the Synods website (http://nsw.uca.org.au/), this year it won for the Insights site (http://insights.uca.org.au/).
And Insights editor, Marjorie Lewis-Jones, also collected a Highly Commended in the Best Feature (Newspaper or Magazine) category for Impoverished by wealth, published in the May 2003 edition.
The Australasian Religious Press Association embraces Christian publications and related agencies in Australia and New Zealand. These range from small magazines to large circulation newspapers, from denominational monthlies to independent weeklies, with publishers ranging from dioceses and synods to mission bodies.
The ARPA Awards, held at the annual convention, are presented for excellence in religious journalism and publishing in a range of categories. They are judged by leading professional journalists.
The 2004 convention was held in Perth from August 13 to 15.
The website award was judged on access, first impressions, navigation, currency, content, audience appeal, use of multi-media, and miscellaneous extras.
The judges said, Insights Online was consistently the highest scorer in all categories.
Of the feature Impoverished by wealth the judges said, This is an excellent treatment of the issues surrounding poverty, materialism and the blind pursuit of wealth in which we have all been caught up. It is well-researched, clearly written and thought-provoking.
Other awards of note for New South Wales Synod folk were a Highly Commended to Rod Pattendon in Eremos, for The Erotic Life of God in the Best Devotional Article category, a Highly Commended to Eremos for And the couch grass whispered & No in the Most Originality section, and winner of Best News Item for Presbytery News (Canberra Region Presbytery) for Greenhills faces challenge of rebuilding.
Not to be too synodochial: Crosslight in Victoria got a commended for Best Headline ("The Cold Testament"), and New Times, South Australia, won Best Original Artwork for a cartoon by Edi Leane.
The Gutenberg award for overall excellence in religious communication this year went to the NZ Catholic.
