Greetings,

The Compass transcript is now available...

Bob Brown: "My mother sent us all to Presbyterian Sunday School, and so I
got a good inculcation into Christianity which is very valuable, because it
does give, it is a coming together of the commonsense, humanity which has
allowed civilisations in their various forms in the same thread of decency
in human behaviour towards each other and explanations as to what we're
doing here, the best people could at the time is there in all the great
religions. I got that from the Presbyterian Sunday School at Trunky Creek
and elsewhere, and it's a very good basis for life."

Andrew Bartlett: "No I'm not a big believer in any sort of organised
religion of any sort these days I must say."

John Anderson: "As I thought about what some of the better lecturers had
said, I said you know I've come to a bit of a fork in the road, in life. If
I'm really going to be - and I can't sit on the fence on issues - I'm not
much good on that. I actually like to push things to their logical end.
And I thought you know, if you look at the secularisation of the West, if
you're going to say no there's no higher authority you're going to end up
where the fascists did if you're logical about it. You're going to say
there's no morality that can be proven to be right or wrong or have any
great claim to substance other than the struggle for power, and I can't go
there. So I'd better go back again and have a look at what I really can
believe. And I found that what I really can believe, because it's so
incredible it has a ring of truth about it, is the Christian message."

Mark Latham: "I'm agnostic. I think there's a force, a spiritual world
beyond the material. But I'm not in a position to define it, let alone put
it into a certain form of religious practice. I'm curious about it and at
different times in my life I feel like I've had maybe an inkling of a
connection to it. But nothing that gives me any conclusions that I could
ever rely on within myself. I mean it's a feeling isn't it, it's not a
rational let's sort of work this out like a mathematical problem. It's a
feeling and an emotion, and if you haven't got it in a strong way then
obviously you can't regard yourself as connected to a certain religion or a
certain god. But it's more a feeling that there is something spiritual
about our existence that goes beyond the material world, the world in which
we sit now, and it's significant.

John Howard: (On being asked by Geraldine Doogue as to whether religion was
at the core of his value system) "In the background. I think it's fair to
say that both my own upbringing which I come from the Methodist tradition of
the Christian church. Although when I do go to church now, which is more
often than Christmas and Easter, but certainly not once a week. I tend to
go to an Anglican church. I don't really care what denomination it is. I'm
not perfect. I'm very wary of people who too frequently parade virtue but I
try and live according to those principles, and try to transmit them to my
own children.

Peter had a go at me, but GD said there'd be a transcript. You can't see
their faces, but it should be worth a read.

Cheers,

Stephen
