I have installed SECE (snv_91) from
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/downloads/sol_ex_dvd/ (2 file DVD) and chose
setup type 3 (Solaris Interactive Text (Desktop Session)). It worked without a
hitch.

A bonus is that you can open another window just as the drive(s) finish
partitioning and enable ZFS compression on the whole drive (to compress your
boot and installation). Details for this hack are on page:
http://number9.hellooperator.net/articles/2008/06/06/solaris-express-zfs-root-install
 .

The ability to open another window allows you to check on things. At certain
points in the install script if it seems to 'hang' simply close the window that
_you_ opened (not any other open windows) as the install script seems to check
for open windows before continuing at certain points during the install. There
is a status window that displays some progress separate from the 'main window'
(with the spinner), plus you can hack behind the installer's back IF you are a
whiz.

The _only_ issue _I_ have is that since I installed it under VMware I get an
incorrect error message:

WARNING: Time-of-day chip unresponsive; dead batteries?

I've tried to use ntp.conf to set the clock but I still get a boot-time message
about my clock being wrong. Both OpenSolaris 2008.05 and Solaris 10 u3 do not
have this issue (under VMware).

Since you are on 'real hardware' I do not expect you will have this trouble
(unless your batteries are dead :) ).

So you might want to try SECE (snv_91) with install option 3.
