This sounds quite like what I was seeing recently on a Toshiba M100
laptop. I think this could be

(but I'm not sure)

Can you try rebooting in failsafe mode, then when it asks if you want to
mount your filesystem on /a, say yes.

Then do:

# cp /a/etc/name_to_major /a/etc/name_to_major.backup and remove the
line that starts:

i915 <some number>

# touch /a/reconfigure
# reboot

and see if that at least allows the machine to boot ?
