FYI, Found the solution/problem: the appropriate dhcp group had set a server-name, but the next-server parameter was missing :-(.
BTW: The x86 jumpstart of u3 (will test snv next week) is still pretty bogus wrt. to sparc jumpstart - took me 3 add. days to fix all the shortcomings (aka scripting workarounds) to get it work unattended as cleanly as its sparc counter part ...
