No, but that's the easiest way to avoid a troublesome situation:

install, patch, later decide you want to add some more packages; at that point,
the newly installed packages won't be properly patches, and at the very least,
you'd have to reinstall any patches that affected them, which would get
tricky if any of the patches obsoleted any other patches.

For a single install, you may need to figure out just which packages you'll 
never
want and do a custom install (unless you can select a cluster and then leave
certain packages out, which I suspect may not be possible).  For multiple 
similar
systems, you'd use Jumpstart or flash archives (images), in which case you'd
only be doing the work once anyway.
