I have the same problem with an ECS motherboard that uses the Nvidia chipset,
with an Athlon X2 CPU.
The mouse cursor disappears after the first logout when using dtlogin. I just
switched to gdm. After
a reboot, the cursor reappeared, and does not disappear when logging out from
gdm. So, something
in the dtlogin logout causes the problem.

Using Nevada b54, I had trouble getting gdm to run. To fix it, I had to change
`default' to `gnome'
in ~/.dmrc . This is not a good solution for multiple users. Without that
change, the ~/.xsession-errors
file records:

/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/openwin/bin/sessreg -a -w
/var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l ":0"
"mills"
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Cannot find Xclients
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: xsm
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession[273]: xsm: not found

and the session terminates immediately.
