(Adding install community.) The "common" laptop from Solaris engineering is a Ferrari 3200/3400, but we're actively getting a wider variety to help with exactly situations like this.
I recently (within the last month) installed a Solaris Express build (the Developer Edition from 02/07, aka 55b, I think), on a Thinkpad x60 from an external USB-attached DVD. Not sure what to make of the hang...if you're sure that you got a good burn on the DVD.
