How will this work with IPv4 and IPv6 ?? I will expect that the DHC WG will be able to make sure this is a proposal which will make sense also for IPv6 broadband subscribers.
I don't think it's a good idea to assume that the dhc wg will be able to sort this out.
The trouble with DHCP and IPv6 is that DHCPv6 is a completely new protocol that runs completely independently from IPv4 DHCP. Adding IPv6 information to IPv4 DHCP doesn't make sense for that reason, and even if we do it anyway, this means that IPv6-only sites would have to run IPv4 DHCP, which would be an extremely ugly hack. On the other hand, considering the following, maybe it's the best way to go.
On the other hand, adding equivalent options to DHCPv6 means that the vendors will have to do significant work to do DHCPv6 snooping. Also, this means that DHCPv6 would be a requirement to subscribe to broadband service. That would be ok for the case where the CPE is an IPv6 router that obtains an IPv6 prefix through DHCPv6 prefix delegation, but NOT in the case where a PC is directly connected to a modem/CPE that functions as a bridge.
And there's the whole "not a user-serviceable part" issue. I really think we need to make sure there will be a workable end result before the dhc wg starts writing a spec.
