I intended it to be something more descriptive than the '/dev/drm_dp_aux0, drm_dp_aux1, drm_dp_aux2, ...' names, to help users identify the connector they're addressing in the mst topology. I guess it could also be used for the purpose you mention as well. Of course, we'd need more reliable and persistent PATH props first. The patch was dropped until this happens.
