Are you using QString::fromUtf8 to decode the received QByteArray?

Thank-you, that was the problem exactly!
Changing it to look like this:
const QByteArray envVarValue{qgetenv("envVar")};
const auto var{QString::fromUtf8(envVarValue)};
fixed it.
