Ok, could we talk ease this, please?
PNG with an alpha channel is just WAY more useful, unless you make them
for the specific background color the user uses.
And JPG does not have transparency - period!
Could we please get 24/32 bit support?

InterMapper 4.0 now also supports PNG and JPEG formats for custom color
icons. PNG and JPEG are the only custom icons that intermapperd will
currently load, and they must have the correct file extension: .png or
.jpg. There are limitations to the support for PNG however -- they
must be non-interlaced images with a palette (ie indexed color table).

Traditional InterMapper (on Mac OS Classic/X) uses QuickTime, and should be able to
handle anything. The imaging limitations are due to the Java client.
The 4.0.1 update adds better support for PNG graphics- provided the client is running
on a Java VM >= 1.3.
If you are using Java 1.3+, you should be able to use any type of PNG. Versions of
Java prior to 1.3 will be limited to PNGs with the above stated limitations.
Any version of Java that will run InterMapper Remote or InterMapper Console will allow
you to use GIF or JPEG images, although GIF images cannot be displayed on the web
server from intermapperd.
The correct file extension is suggested, but not required.
As you have stated recently on this list, color icons do not show their state. We are
working on a way to implement this. In the meantime, you can still create custom
monochrome icons such as the ones in The Custom Icon Gathering Project. These no
longer have to be created as Macintosh resources, but can be created as special PNGs.
If you wish to create custom bitmap icons, there are some rules that must be followed:
The image must be a non-interlaced PNG with an three-color palette. The palette
colors are assigned as follows:
0 - Transparent
1 - Background (traditionally blue, but the actual color is
irrelevant)
2 - Foreground (traditionally black, but the actual color is
irrelevant)
The tRNS chunk should point to the transparent color in the palette (index 0).
Such an icon will act just as a built-in icon - the Background will be replaced by the
specified colors for Network, Up, Warning, Alarm, Down, etc.
For examples, look in the icon cache of InterMapper Remote/Console.
