Is anyone successfully monitoring a LES connection?
When a LES goes down, the switch port generally stays up. I suppose it
would be possible to write a custom probe which triggers an alarm when
the incoming traffic on the switch port stops.
Any other ideas?
A LES circuit is a LAN Extension service, so it looks like Ethernet in a
MAN or WAN setting (for the benefit of non UK readers). I guess from your
question you must be running it at layer 2 and not using routers (except
perhaps in bridging mode).
Why not just monitor some device with reliable uptime at the other end?
Better still, use a router (or layer 3 capable switch) and avoid
unnecessary broadcast traffic on the link. You could migrate to this by
using VLANs over the link and then slowly migrating services. Shout offline
if you need help.
