Well, I'm one of those Linux and Windows users (since I have not been able to acquire a mac yet), so maybe you guys are talking about something else, but I can't stand files (installers/packages) that DON'T have the version number in the filename. Once the program is installed, then sure it could just be called "intermapper_remote" or something.

With every new version, I run through the installer (for windows, its intermapper remote, and linux (debian flavor) runs the server, which I use dpkg --install).

But perhaps for the mac, you just drop the file in place, and you are done (the way life SHOULD be, IMHO). But if thats the case, then I'd still say to keep the version numbers in the filename, and let people create a link to it (and all other links point to THAT link). Then, when you've got a big pile-o-files, you know the versions, plus you can easily roll back to any version.
