The way I think this would be best integrated is sort of like this:

1: Create real two way relations between maps (so we can have hierarchical map lists) and a 'top-map' where all Vantage points end up in. (ie. the InterMapper PC) It would be really cool, if it was possible to control/right-click a device or interface, and then 'connect' it to another interface/ device on another map, and this way create a exit-point on the parent map and a 'vantage point' on the child map.

The plan is to add an option to Map Status probes to create a "backlink" on the referred to map. The backlink would allow you to easily navigate from the submap back to the top-level map; it would also be used as a connection point for a vantage point on the top level map to reach into the submap.

2: Add services to a host, either by changing the 'device' to actually be a map-within-the-map, or by enabling some 'device- probes' to allow add-on 'service-probes' Like, the Host Resources could allow sub-services like FTP/SMTP/ AppleShare etc...

This is exactly where my question regarding the parent/child relationship between devices was leading. We are often asked how to make a collection of services all running on the same device appear as a single icon on a map. Currently, the only way to do this is to fake it with the Map Status probe. An alternative proposal would be to link the subservient "service" probes to a the parent "device" probe. The parent "device" probe -- either SNMP or Ping -- would control the visual representation of the device on the map (its links to other objects and ants), and the "sub-devices" would be accessible only through the parent's icon. There would be an implied vantage point link between the parent and sub-devices so if the parent probe fails, the other devices would fall under its shadow. However, in all other respects, sub-devices would be independent probes with separate notifiers, poll intervals, and thresholds.

Attaching service probes as "sub-devices" would be optional. You would still be able to create maps where each service probe has its own map icon.

Thoughts on this?
