Selecting 'Open Status Window' from the contextual menu takes just as long to open the window, but you are not in the middle of an action and waiting for it to display. You can continue working and the status window will display asap. When you press the mouse on an object and hold it and wait for the window, then the wait-cursor will be displayed because you are in the middle of an action and if you let go of the mouse button before the window shows, it will cancel the popup. It is simply feedback to let you know that the window is loading and "please just hold the mouse button a little bit longer".
