InterMapper 4.5 supports GIF's. We added the GIF support back some time ago. Animated GIF's appear to work in InterMapper on Mac OS X as both backgrounds and vertex shapes. The client caches the background image locally, so updating the file in your InterMapper Settings folder will not cause the Remote client to update the background image. The server needs to detect that the background image file has changed, then notify all the clients. Changing the background image may affect the web side of things. The animated background GIF will even animate on the web (since IM 4.5.x splits the map and background into different layers.) The web server caches smaller files in memory, so you may only see the "dynamic" effect if the image file is above a certain size.
