Hi Debbie, RAM available at database creation time only affects settings if it's very low, i.e. below 200MB or so; in your case there shouldn't be a difference. Postgres benefits from some memory tuning, though we don't yet provide a UI or automated way to do that; it's something we're working on. The parameters are in the config/database/posgresql.conf file, and documentation can be found at http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/runtime-config.html. You'll be mainly interested in work_mem and maintenance_work_mem, which we leave somewhat low by default.
I would also check that it's the database service (the 5-10 postgres processes) that are using the memory. It may instead be IMDC itself, whose memory usage scales with the number of datasets and the amount of data being imported. Peak memory usage can be quite high during that initial phase where it's loading large quantities of old data; once that's complete it drops significantly. So I asked the VM folks to give me 4G, and started again (deleted database, whole restart). So RAM usage goes up to 600 MB and stops climbing. now if that's really all it needs, fine. I wondered though since I didn't reinstall imdc, do I need to tell postgress that it has more RAM available now, of will it adjust itself to having more? I know on mysql you need to update a settings file in the .my.ini to really use more RAM well. I don't see any kind of control panel into that part of the built-in database. Am I just missing it, or can you not adjust those kinds of settings (or do they not need adjusting in postgress?) .+-j·!÷¬Ûiÿü0Âf¢ªÜ+Þr¿{^®f©¥êíjY8ÒX¬µÖ«·«yÊ&ý:.˱Êâmëצj)m íz³¦«M©d¡÷åË]j»pj·¢
