I think it might depend on how populated your area is.

If you turn on the "Spot Image" and "DigitalGlobe Coverage" layers you can see 
the dates and other information about the imagery used.  In some cases you can 
select images from different times as well.

In my area seems to get updated about once every three years. The resolution 
improved in the last update.
